first_imgBatsman Virender Sehwag who finally found his form and struck a smashing 96 against Sri Lanka in the first ODI said on Monday that giving the team a good start mattered more than his own centuries. “Giving the team a good start is more important that my own performance,” said the Delhi batsman. “We played well in the first ODI but we need to be persistent in our game,” Sehwag added.Commenting on the slow over rate fine imposed on Team India, Sehwag said, “We always try to bowl our overs in time.”Sehwag was given a reprieve by Tillakaratne Dilshan in the first ODI who dropped him at point when he was zero. The Delhi marauder took full advantage of the missed opportunity smashing 10 fours on his way to 96 runs of just 97 balls.Sehwag and Virat Kohli then put India firmly in control with the score on 180 for one in the 31st over, before Sehwag was run out.The second match in the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka will be played on Tuesday at Hambantota.last_img read more

first_imgNEW YORK — For a while there, it seemed as though the New York Mets would never make another out.Yoenis Cespedes and the rest of the Mets broke loose for a team-record 12 runs in the third inning April 29th, rolling to their seventh straight victory with a 13-1 blowout of the San Francisco Giants.Cespedes set a club mark with six RBIs in the inning, connecting for a two-run single off starter Jake Peavy and a grand slam against reliever Mike Broadway that capped the outburst.“Everybody was barreling balls up that inning,” Mets catcher Kevin Plawecki said. “It was pretty crazy, really. Just one after the other after the other.”The early barrage made it an easy night for Steven Matz (3-1) in the opener of a three-game series between the last two NL champions. The left-hander tossed six shutout innings to win his third consecutive start.Michael Conforto had an RBI double and a run-scoring single in the Mets’ third, which lasted 39 minutes. He and Cespedes were two of the four players who scored twice. Asdrubal Cabrera greeted Broadway with a two-run double.“One of those freaky things that you don’t ever expect to have against a team as good as the Giants,” Mets Manager Terry Collins said. The first eight New York batters reached safely, four on walks, before Matz struck out trying to bunt. Curtis Granderson, David Wright and Conforto then singled before Cespedes launched his third career slam into the left-field corner.“It’s unbelievable,” Conforto said. “He’s been nursing his leg and hasn’t seen live pitching in three, four days, and he just comes out there, doesn’t miss a beat. I mean, it’s just incredible.”Back in the lineup after missing five starts with a bruised right thigh, Cespedes set another franchise record by getting an extra-base hit for the ninth straight game — also a career best.New York (14-7) has won 12 of 14 and owns the longest current winning streak in the majors.“We’ve just been grinding on pitchers,” Conforto said. “We’ve been tough.”The previous Mets record was 11 runs in the sixth inning against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on July 16, 2006. Butch Huskey held the old team mark for RBIs in an inning with five in the sixth against the Marlins on May 26, 1998.It was the biggest inning against the Giants since they gave up 13 runs in the sixth to the Montreal Expos in San Francisco on May 7, 1997.Peavy (1-2) got only six outs on 70 pitches. The right-hander walked five in two-plus innings and was charged with six runs and four hits. He has an 8.61 ERA after five starts, having allowed 39 hits and seven walks in 23 innings.“Obviously, I know I’ve got to be better. I’m not OK with anything that’s happened,” Peavy said. “I’m not concerned with thinking anything’s going the wrong way. That being said, we’ve got to figure out a way to get some results in this next start.”Angel Pagan homered for the Giants in the seventh. San Francisco had won five of six.“This is going to be a great test for us this weekend,” Collins said before the game. “Two good teams going head to head, with big expectations.”(MIKE FITZPATRICK, AP Baseball Writer)TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

World Cup 2019: Khawaja shines as Australia conclude warm-up in style

first_imgAustralia concluded their World Cup preparation on an emphatic note, beating a struggling Sri Lanka by five wickets in their final warm-up game here on Monday.Usman Khawaja, who opened alongside skipper Aaron Finch in place of a rested David Warner, anchored the chase with 89 off 105 balls. Australia eventually breezed to victory in 44.5 overs.Sri Lanka, who have lost eight of their last nine ODIs, scored 239 for eight after opting to bat with opener Lahiru Thirimanne making 56 off 69 balls.Australia went into the game with 12 players as they did in their first warm-up game against England. The Finch-led squad rested Warner, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Jason Behrendorff to give game time to those who did not take the field against favourites England on Saturday when Australia beat the World Cup hosts by 12 runs.Pace spearhead Mitchell Starc bowled nine overs, picking up a wicket for 39 runs while Pat Cummins bowled eight overs in which he removed Thisara Perera and conceded 23 runs.It was another clinical effort from Australia who have the become the team to beat in the upcoming World Cup alongside England. They staged a remarkable turnaround that began with a 3-2 series win in India in March before they blanked Pakistan 5-0 in the UAE.Australia cruise to win even without Smith and WarnerThey did all of that in the absence of Steve Smith and Warner who are now back to provide a massive boost to a unit that seems to be peaking at the right time. While Smith starred against England with a century, it was the turn of Khawaja to make it count in the middle. He took his time in a solid knock, hitting only three fours. By coming out to bat after hurting his left knee while fielding, the southpaw dispelled concerns over his fitness.advertisementKey middle-order batsman Glenn Maxwell, who did not play against England, scored a run-a-ball 36 ahead of his team’s World Cup opener against Afghanistan in Bristol on June 1.Also Read | Virat Kohli captain on paper but MS Dhoni on ground: Suresh RainaAlso Read | Conflict of Interest allegation against Sachin Tendulkar infructuous: BCCI ethics officerAlso See:last_img read more

first_imgThere’s nothing quite like the feeling of riding a bike during the summer. The breeze blowing through your face as you blaze through city streets while you get from one place to another makes quite a great substitute to walking and driving. But trying to look like you have any sort of style sense while on a bike can be tough; sometimes your pants get caught in your bike chain. We suggest you get a pair of light pants that you can move in and roll up. Finish out your look with a shirt that isn’t too stiff and a pair of casual yet cool canvas sneakers and top it off with a bike helmet and bag so that you can tote all your stuff around. Most of these schools have been given a leeway by the government to function as most of the quality private schools in the city are not able to accommodate the students. There have been various incidents in the past where schools that consisting of 300 to 500 students have closed down abruptly Various schools on the pretext of enhancement of facilities and implementation of seventh pay commission had increased their school fees. This has led to thousands of parents protesting against such schools not only in Gurugram but also in Delhi. For long there has been a complaint that it is a tactic by thees schools to harass the parents of paying more fees the parents highlighted that how in the past the school has been non-transparent in its ways. They have also highlighted that they will not withdraw their wards from the school and if required will raise the matter to the higher officials. Earlier the schools have operated under different names in order to get licences for obtaining the licence for an educational institute. “We really hope that the public agencies really rein in these schools because the lack of action by the authorities has resulted in these schools now running an education mafia where the middle-class parents are financially exploited as they do not have an option. UN says refugees fleeing new attacks in Darfur many to dangerous area

29 February 2008As West Darfur continues to be scourged by a new wave of air and ground attacks, the United Nations refugee agency estimated today that more than 13,000 Sudanese have fled to a remote area of Chad that is beset by its own inter-ethnic strife. According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), just this week an additional 3,000 refugees arrived in eastern Chad’s volatile Birak area, where an assistance mission was cancelled yesterday after armed men on horseback were spotted, along with black smoke rising from a burning village.“The insecurity and close proximity to the Sudanese border mean UNHCR cannot establish a camp in the Birak area, but we are trying to provide emergency assistance when our teams can get there,” UNHCR spokesman Ron Redmond said in Geneva. The agency is still awaiting approval from the Government of Chad to move the refugees to existing camps that already house 240,000 people uprooted by the five-year conflict in Darfur, in which the Sudanese Government and militias are fighting rebel factions and in which over 200,000 people, mainly non-combatants, have died.A UNHCR team which reached the Birak area earlier in the week reported that the new arrivals had come there because of repeated militia assaults on the Jebel Moun region of West Darfur.Meanwhile, the Deputy Special Representative for Sudan, Ameerah Haq, visited Sileah in West Darfur yesterday as part of an inter-agency assessment mission and found the town – which normally has a population of 20,000 – almost empty. Only around 300 people remained, mostly elderly citizens who could not flee. The town was attacked on 8 February, in the beginning of the current onslaught. read more

For the first time in 13 years a full moon will occur

Coming this Friday night: the spookiest full moon in 13 years. This Friday the 13th full moon is the first since January 2006.But this full moon, most commonly known as the harvest moon, will appear much smaller than most. That’s because the moon will be at apogee, or the farthest point in its roughly four-week orbit. Timeanddate.com estimates a “micromoon” appears 14 per cent smaller and 30 per cent dimmer than the widely reported “supermoons” that dominate the news.Though there is no universal definition governing what qualifies as a supermoon or micromoon, Time and Date says micromoons must be more than 251,655 miles away from Earth. Friday night’s moon will be 816 miles farther than that.Supermoons, on the other hand, must be at least 2,039 miles closer to Earth than a micromoon. Most of the time, the moon sits somewhere in between those bounds.Story continues belowThis advertisement has not loaded yet,but your article continues below. The moon rises over Washington at 7:31 p.m. Friday. Just look to the east about five minutes after sunset, and you’ll see the orange disk poking above the horizon. Until it’s firmly planted high in the sky, however, it’ll be tough to appreciate just how small it looks. A full moon rises behind the Temple of Poseidon in Cape Sounion, near Athens, Greece, August 15, 2019. If you’re looking for a fun Friday night, considering inviting your friends and/or resident canine to howl together at the lunar disk. Some call the harvest moon the “corn moon,” since September marks a time during which farmers in the Plains typically begin harvesting their corn. Farther north, some may wait a bit later. This Friday the 13th full moon won’t technically reach peak illumination until 12:32 a.m. Eastern time on Saturday, but for all practical purposes is considered full Friday night. This was also the case in January 2006, when the moon rose the night of the 13th but became full on 4:48 a.m. on Saturday, the 14th.The next time we’ll have a moon approaching fullness on Friday the 13th (before achieving total illumination the next morning) will be in a little over 13 years, in May 2033.And if you’re looking for something really riveting, mark your calendar for 2037. There will be two blue moons in a span of three months – a blue moon defined as the second full moon in a calendar month. They’ll occur on Jan. 31 and March 31, both months that will also feature a full moon on the first of the month. In addition, March 13, 2037, falls on a Friday. What a time to be alive. Music publishers caught faking billions of YouTube video views

first_imgMusic publishers are determined to stamp out piracy through lawsuits, pushing hard for new laws, and advertising campaigns to highlight how bad piracy is. But when it comes to bolstering revenue from YouTube videos, it seems they don’t mind breaking the rules and generating billions of fake views. The problem is, Google has caught three music publishers doing just that, and deleted billions of video views in response.RCA, Sony/BMG, and Universal, have all been found to be using online services in order to generate more views for specific videos. By doing this it creates more interest as the videos are seen as being popular and in turn get more exposure. But views also generate revenue for both Google and the music publishers from the adverts positioned next to them. The extent of the artificial views is quite staggering. RCA had managed to add 39 million fake views to its videos, Sony/BMG added 847.7 million, but Universal is the worst offender and has had well over a billion fake views removed from videos. I can only imagine the impact those views had on the exposure and revenue-generating ability of each video. It looks as though Google has just slapped these companies on the wrist for violating YouTube’s terms of service. If this were a user, they’d be facing an account ban, but it’s a bit different when the violation is performed by companies who must generate a considerable amount of revenue for Google, even before faking video views.I’d say this is the last we’ll hear about this particular incident, but I would not be at all surprised to see more fake views appearing in the future. They’ll probably just use a new method to generate them and hope to not get caught again.via Tom’s Guidelast_img read more

first_imgA white Ford Fusion that rammed a Vancouver police car and led officers on a chase Tuesday night is believed to be connected to multiple vehicle prowls, police said Wednesday.Officers with Vancouver’s Neighborhood Response Teams were watching an apartment complex Tuesday night to attempt to find the car, a 2010 four-door Fusion with Oregon license plate WVN807, police spokeswoman Kim Kapp said. The plate was stolen from a different car, she said.Officers found the car and were watching it when two subjects got into the car, Kapp said. Police pinned the vehicle against a curb and ordered people out of the car. The driver jumped the curb, went into reverse and slammed into an undercover police car. The police car went back 10 feet and spun 90 degrees, Kapp said. A sergeant had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.The Fusion’s driver left the parking lot and fled the area at a high rate of speed, running stop signs, Kapp said. Police saw the car heading east on Southeast 29th Street at 164th Avenue but lost it after that.According to police, the car is believed to be connected to several auto prowls. first_imgSAN FRANCISCO — Netflix raised prices for new subscribers by $1, to $8.99 a month, the first increase in three years for the video-streaming service that offers the series “House of Cards.”As part of the change, the world’s largest subscription streaming service introduced a $7.99 plan that doesn’t deliver high-definition TV or let subscribers view programs on more than one device at a time, according to the Los Gatos, California- based company. The move reflects Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings’s acknowledgment last month that his rising budget for movies and TV shows would require higher prices. Existing customers will continue to pay the same price for another two years.“To continue to add more movies and TV shows, we are increasing the price of our $7.99-a-month streaming plan by $1 to $8.99,” Netflix said in an email. The increase, amounting to almost 13 percent, is effective immediately worldwide, said Jonathan Friedland, a Netflix spokesman. The change may be greater in some countries because of currency effects, he said. Existing customers, in addition to avoiding the price increase for now, keep the ability to watch on two devices at once.last_img read more
