NORTHRIDGE – A woman who was being chased at more than 100 mph was killed this morning when she ran a red light and ignited a horrific four-vehicle collision that included a Metro bus, critically injuring two others, including a city firefighter, authorities said. The 6 a.m. collision occurred at Roscoe and Reseda boulevards when a Lexus sport-utility vehicle heading west collided with a pickup truck southbound on Reseda, said Los Angeles police Detective Joel Price of the Devonshire Homicide division. Witnesses told police the woman in the Lexus was apparently being chased by someone in another vehicle, Price said. The pickup’s driver was a Los Angeles City Fire Department firefighter on his way to work, department spokesman Jim Wells said. His name has not been released. The force of the collision flipped the pickup and ripped its engine and transmission, throwing them several yards west. The two vehicles then collided with an MTA bus and a sedan stopped for the red light at the southwest corner of Reseda and Roscoe, Price said. The driver of the Lexus, whose name and age have not been released, died at the scene. As of 10:30 a.m., her body remained hanging out the driver’s side window covered by a blood-stained tarp. The firefighter and the sedan’s driver were transported to the adjacent Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where they are listed in critical condition. The bus driver and at least two passengers were also transported with minor injuries. The bus’ front windows were smashed, and glass and debris, including a bicycle and a child’s stuffed toy were strewn about the scene. Price said all of the drivers were wearing seat belts. Anyone with information on the accident, including a description of the vehicle chasing the SUV, can call Price at (818) 832-0537.— lisa.sodders@dailynews.com (818) 713-3663last_img read more

‘DRINK-DRIVER’ CLEARED AFTER BEING ILLEGALLY HANDCUFFED IN DONEGAL LEGAL PRECEDENT

December 25, 2019

first_imgA CO Donegal man has made legal history after being cleared of drink-driving – despite being TWICE the legal drink drive limit.Lee Gibson (24) from Fr Arnold Terrace in Manorcunningham had fought the case against him at Buncrana District Court on the grounds that his rights had been infringed when handcuffed by Gardaí.Mr Gibson was stopped in the car park of Lidl in Buncrana on September 13 last year. Garda Tom Duggan said he had gone to the car park after reports that a damaged vehicle was in the area. Mr Gibson was arrested, handcuffed and taken to Buncrana Garda Station where a reading of 80mg/ml was recorded – the limit is 35.Solicitor Frank Dorrian however challenged the legality of the Garda behaviour on the day, saying his client should never have been handcuffed in the first place.Under cross-examination from Mr Dorrian, Garda Duggan claimed he had arrested Mr Gibson because he had tried to run away. But Mr Dorrian said that both the sworn statement of the garda and his notebook had never referred to Mr Gibson “running” from the scene. In fact, said the solicitor, both statements had said Mr Gibson was walking away from the car. Mr Dorrian put it to Garda Duggan that he had said his client was “staggering.”He wanted to know how it was possible for Mr Gibson to be running, walking and staggering all at the same time.Under re-examination by Inspector David Murphy, the garda said he had handcuffed Mr Gibson on health and safety grounds. But Mr Dorrian – using case law from another case (DPP v Cullen) – objected to the legality of the arrest in the first place. He said it was clear that Mr Gibson had in fact been compliant at all times with gardai. He had never tried to flee the scene.Mr Gibson hadn’t tried to “run away” as had been claimed – and this wasn’t in any Garda statement.Under the law a Garda can only handcuff someone when there was “a real and reasonably held belief” that someone was fleeing the scene.Mr Gibson, he said, was not.Mr Gibson had not run away, nor attempted to run away.Judge Paul Kelly agreed with the defence solicitor’s argument saying he found it “unusual” that gardai would claim in court that someone had tried to flee a scene but had not stated the same thing in either the notebook or in a subsequent statement.Judge Kelly dismissed the case.‘DRINK-DRIVER’ CLEARED AFTER BEING ILLEGALLY HANDCUFFED IN DONEGAL LEGAL PRECEDENT was last modified: April 13th, 2014 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:buncranaDistrict CourtDorrianGardaiJudge Paul Kellylegal historySolicitor Frank Dorrianlast_img read more

MARATHON MAN IN SEARCH OF DONEGAL RUNNER WHO HELPED HIM CROSS LINE

first_imgRunner Martin Murphy is searching for a Donegal man who helped him cross the finish line of the Dublin City Marathon to say “thank you”!The Westmeath man who runs for St Brigid’s AC in Castlepollard, was running his fourth Dublin marathon, when he hit the ‘wall’ at mile 20.He struggled on after that, but it was the helping hand of a stranger, Padraic Lenehan, that got him across the finish line. Martin revealed “Everything was going well. I was enjoying the race and the atmosphere on the day, but I was aiming for a time and I started off too fast. When I reached the 20-mile mark I hit the wall and the wheels came off the wagon,” Martin said.“I was struggling really badly. I had to walk from 20 miles because once you hit the wall you don’t come back from it. With 200 metres to go, everything locked up.“I could see the finish line but my legs and arms wouldn’t move and next thing, out of nowhere someone came along, put out his arm, and helped me across the finish line.“It was absolutely amazing. He was like an angel on the day. Only for him, I was out of it. I don’t know him and I didn’t have the chance to say thank you, so if anyone out there knows how I can get in touch with him I’d greatly appreciate it.”  MARATHON MAN IN SEARCH OF DONEGAL RUNNER WHO HELPED HIM CROSS LINE was last modified: November 7th, 2014 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:donegalMarathonPauric Lenihanrunnerlast_img read more

SA pays tribute to Amina Cachalia

first_img1 February 2013 South Africans from across the political spectrum have paid tribute to Amina Cachalia, a staunch anti-apartheid activist and long-time friend of former president Nelson Mandela, who passed away on Thursday, aged 82. “A seasoned campaigner for women’s rights and one of the liberation movement’s foremost stalwarts, Amina came from a fiercely political family and dedicated her life full-on to the emancipation of all oppressed people in South Africa,” the Presidency said in a statement on Friday. Her political activism saw her play leading roles as a member of the Transvaal Indian Youth Congress and Transvaal Indian Congress, as treasurer of the Federation of South African Women (Fedsaw) and as patron of the Federation of Transvaal Women, among others.‘Tireless fighter for liberation’ “Our country has lost one of the most tireless and consummate fighters for liberation that we have known,” President Jacob Zuma said, “and we would like to express our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, comrades and all who had the privilege of knowing her.” Cachalia had several stints in prison, including when she was arrested during the 1952 Defiance Campaign and also participated in the 1956 Women’s March against apartheid pass laws, and became a banned person at various stages. African National Congress (ANC) spokesman Jackson Mthembu said “Comrade Amina” was “among the women who are credited for having placed gender equity firmly as a site of struggle and aligned it to broader struggles led by the ANC. As an individual she lived through the pain of police harassment, imprisonment, house arrests, banning and humiliation.” Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille said, that, as a member of the Indian Youth Congress and founder of the Women’s Progressive Union, Cachalia “fought fiercely to overcome injustice and racial discrimination”. Zille said that Cachalia, together with Helen Joseph, Lillian Ngoyi and Ida Mtwana, had founded Fedsaw, which led 20 000 women on the 1956 Women’s March to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. A Member of Parliament after South Africa’s first democratic elections of 1994, Cachalia received the Order of Luthuli in recognition of a life spent fighting for freedom and democracy.‘Travelled a long road with Mr Mandela’ The Nelson Mandela Foundation said on Friday that it had learned with great sadness of Cachalia’s passing. “Amina Cachalia travelled a long road with Mr Mandela and his family. She and her husband Yusuf were friends with Mr Mandela in the years before he went to prison,” the foundation said in a statement. “After he was imprisoned in 1962, they kept in touch through letters. Only after he was transferred to Pollsmoor Prison was he finally allowed to be visited by Mrs Cachalia and her husband. “They resumed their friendship after his release in 1990. In 1995 Mrs Cachalia assisted him at a luncheon he arranged for the widows of leaders from across the political spectrum. As the widow of apartheid prime minister Hendrik Verwoerd could not attend, Mr Mandela travelled to the white enclave of Orania to visit her. Mrs Cachalia accompanied him. “On 1 June 1986, when he was in Pollsmoor Prison, he wrote her a letter saying: ‘I love you and Yusuf very much and you are always in my thoughts … There is, therefore, no danger whatsoever of me forgetting you.’” SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Tsnomore Long Silky to Grey Straight Ombre Synthetic Wig – Very happy with this product

first_imgIs that the entrance centre parting will make it glimpse really much like a wig i have to use a hair band. Truly beautiful sensation wig, my challenge with it, is that the front centre parting tends to make it glimpse incredibly a great deal like a wig i have to use a hair band to hide the front.Like it appears to be genuinely good feels great not heavy xx.Really wonderful for the price would definitely advocate shades a small. Incredibly nice for the selling price would surely advocate shades a minor but for the selling price i would not complain and the element in could be much better but then again for the selling price its good ??????.Over all very synthetic, not the same length but good for pictures or cosplay.Great quality for the priceWas great. It could be a little thicker so you Hair colour and feel is lovely. The parting is Great for short term useVery happy with this product Seems to be seriously great on, but the parting is really white and plastic looking. I experienced to produce a facet parting and comb the hair around to the side. It seemed fabulous for a although. Of class it didn’t last as well long- synthetic, and top quality is just ok. But for a a person-off event or a night out, a great wig.Parting @ leading a bit wrong seeking.I really like this wig, the only factor is the white patch rite on the leading at the front,, would make it ovs it can be a wig, aside from dat it is lovely also sent following working day.Great wig, thick, lots, very good high-quality hair, combs very well with out knotting, comfortable to don, all the things is fantastic .But only factor it hasn’t got are maintain in clips so it stays on your cap.Attractive wig, had lots of compliments on it and people imagined it was my authentic hair.Love it arrived when mentioned terrific good quality and colour match best.Hair colour and feel is beautiful. Hair colour and sense is wonderful. The parting is white plastic and bery bulking in which the plastic has been folded which is this sort of a shame as it could be attractive.Tsnomore long silky black to qingdao. Funky hair adore it and really like carrying, great value for income.Good wig for the rate, individuals even asked me when did i dye my hair, lol. The wig is so awesome and comfortable and long, which i really like :d downfall?. The parting is white, just use concealer/foundation to match it to your skin tone, other than that it can be so good, i get hundreds of compliments :d.Okay, but the scalp component seems to be definitely phony, can only truly wear this with a hat.In excess of all pretty synthetic, not the same length but good for photos or cosplay. . This isn’t horrible excellent but it is not a little something you could have on every day and get absent with it. I have not attempted to curl this but i wouldn’t dare. It is 100% synthetic and i am quite absolutely sure this will burn off. It’s not as long as the photo shows either, i’ve connected a photograph to demonstrate the genuine length. The picture can make it look a lot more luscious than it is on the other hand, about all if you just want to use this for pics or cosplay then it truly is excellent. It has no clips to hold it in area even though the double sided tape may well keep it in spot for cosplay. The good news is i in no way prepared to dress in it out of the household any way.The greatest wig i go ugh so significantly. I genuinely enjoy this wig , the ideal wig i acquired so considerably.Very good things as pictured wonderful come to feel organic color. Good stuffas picturedgreat sense all-natural color. It truly is a minor shorter than the image but other than that a good high-quality wig.Long, tender,a little bit much too shiny on top and slighty too thin. But i afenit operate an it appears pretty superior. Excellent decision for cosplaysband partys. It could be a minimal thicker so you. It could be a tiny thicker so you can design it far more and was a minimal difficult to get on, but apart from that it’s well worth the revenue. It could be a little bit extra thicker and that the parting was not so faux hunting, but it is worth the funds.Like this does not seem bogus and had masses of compliments will purchase once more.last_img read more

Bike Power Could Bring Mobile Social Media to the World

first_imgMobile computing may be the great equalizer for people in the developing world, but access to affordable, reliable energy to power mobile devices is not a trivial matter. Nokia today introduced a bicycle dynamo that charges your mobile phone when you pedal.Go for a bike ride and then spend the evening reading and publishing to Facebook Zero, which is now free of data charges as well? It’s not hard to picture millions of people doing exactly that. When power becomes easy and free, all kinds of new uses of mobile devices make more sense. Nokia sold 35% of all mobile phones in the world in the first quarter of 2010.The company says that a ten minute bike ride will power 28 minutes worth of talking time. The kit will cost about €15, around $18. Nokia also unveiled a phone that can switch between multiple SIM cards with the push of a button, making it easier for families to share phones but maintain different contact lists. They say that freedom of the press belongs to those who can afford to own one. It turns out that millions of people already had one in their pocket and now it’s powered by bike.
