Magazine Brands WellRepresented Among Webby Awards Finalists

September 14, 2019

first_imgMagazine media brands are continuing to prove their digital worth. This year’s Webby Awards finalists were announced, and the top two nominees aren’t the digital natives you might expect. Vice tallied 16 nominations, more than anyone else in this year’s field. Not far behind is National Geographic, who is nominated for 14. Publishers—traditional and digital natives—are well represented across the board. The New York Times, for instance, racked up 10 nominations and the quickly emerging women’s lifestyle brand Refinery29 was close behind with eight nods. Other notables include Guardian News & Media, who also received eight nominations and The Onion picked up six.  Television also did well, which indicates legacy media brands are disrupting some of the disrupters. HBO received 10 nominations and another seven nominations went to CNN. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of The Webby Awards. As one can imagine, the categories have changed quite a bit since the days of dial up. IDG and its now-defunct magazine, The Web, launched the first program with a mere $30,000 in seed money and a small panel of judges that later became founders of The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS). The program now receives nearly 15,000 entries from more than 70 countries worldwide and the corresponding event attracts celebrities and digital elites.last_img read more

BMW 840i brings straight6 power to the flagship coupe and convertible

BMW When BMW introduced the four-door 8 Series Gran Coupe, one trim level appeared that wasn’t present on the 8 Series’ two-door variants — the 840i, powered by an inline-six gas engine. Many figured that BMW would just announce other 840i variants at a later date, and what do you know, today is that later date.BMW on Wednesday announced two new trim levels for the BMW 8 Series Coupe and Convertible, 840i and 840i xDrive. Both receive their power from a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six gas engine, which produces 335 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 840i Coupe will reach 60 miles per hour in 4.7 seconds, while 840i xDrive Coupes will do the same sprint in 4.4 seconds. The convertibles are a few tenths slower. When wearing all-season tires, the top speed is limited to 130 mph, but summer tires will extend that to 155 mph.The 840i models lose only a bit of the aggression found on the sportier M850i and M8 variants. It’s still a stunning coupe, with standard LED headlights and curves galore. The straight-six Bimmers wear two trapezoidal exhaust tips out back to help differentiate models. The convertible rocks a fabric soft top that can raise and lower in 15 seconds at speeds up to 30 mph. 840i xDrive models receive standard rear-wheel steering, but that’s optional on the RWD 840i, which makes up for it by offering an M Sport differential that can’t be had on the AWD ImageThe convertible looks just as sleek as the coupe. BMW There’s plenty of kit inside still, despite the 840i models technically being a tier below their siblings. Keyless access, ambient lighting, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, a head-up display, automatic emergency braking and BMW’s latest iDrive infotainment system are all standard. Safety-minded folks can opt for a bevy of active and passive safety systems including active lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality. Production for the 840i and 840i xDrive commences in July, same as all other 8 Series variants, with the cars going on sale in September. The 840i Coupe starts at $88,895 including destination, while the 840i xDrive Coupe brings the price up to $91,795. Dropping the top costs even more, with the 840i Convertible commanding $98,395 and the 840i xDrive Convertible at $101,295. Malaysia tells Myanmar to stop the killing of Rohingya

September 3, 2019

first_imgMalaysian prime minister Najib Razak called on Myanmar on Thursday to stop all discrimination and attacks on Rohingya Muslims, and urged the world’s Islamic countries to act to end an unfolding “humanitarian tragedy”.Malaysia has spoken out strongly against mostly Buddhist Myanmar over its treatment of its Rohingya minority, especially since October, when security forces launched a crackdown in the north of Rakhine State on the Bangladesh border, where many Rohingya live.At least 86 people have been killed and an estimated 66,000 have fled into Bangladesh since nine Myanmar policemen were killed on 9 October in attacks on border posts the Myanmar government blamed on Rohingya supported by foreign militants.”The killing must stop. The violation of women and girls must stop,” Najib, the leader of Muslim-majority Malaysia told a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) called by Malaysia to discuss the Rohingya.”The persecution of your fellow men and women, simply on the grounds that they are Muslim, must stop,” he said.Refugees, residents and human rights groups say Myanmar forces have committed summary executions, raped women and burned homes. But the Myanmar government led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi has denied the accusations, saying many of the reports are fabricated. It insists the strife in Rakhine State is an internal matter.Najib, who joined protesters in Kuala Lumpur last month calling for foreign intervention to stop “genocide”, said Myanmar must act.”We call on the government of Myanmar to cease all discriminatory actions and attacks against the Rohingyas immediately, and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice,” he said.Rohingya have faced discrimination in Myanmar for generations. They are not classified as a distinct group under citizenship law and are regarded instead as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, entitled only to limited rights. The violence in the north of Rakhine State since October is the most serious since communal clashes in 2012 in which hundreds of people were killed.’SAVE THEM’Malaysia summoned Myanmar’s ambassador last year to protest against the treatment of Rohingya, breaking a tradition of non-intervention by members of the Association of South East Asian Nations in each other’s affairs.Najib said it would be a disgrace if the Southeast Asian group did not live up to it principles and do its utmost to “avert the catastrophe that has been unfolding”.He told the fellow Muslim countries of the OIC they could not “stand by and do nothing”.”It is incumbent on us all to do what we can to save them from the humanitarian tragedy they are suffering,” he said. The OIC represents 57 states with a population of more than 1.6 billion people, and acts as the collective voice of the Muslim world.Najib called on Myanmar to provide unimpeded access for humanitarian aid to the affected areas and to facilitate the return of refugees. He said Malaysia would give 10 million ringgit ($2.25 million) for the humanitarian efforts, and send a food flotilla. No further details were made available.About 56,000 Rohingya live in Malaysia having fled and unrest and persecution in Myanmar. The OIC’s special envoy to Myanmar said this week the United Nations should intervene to avert genocide.OIC Secretary General Yousef Al Othaimeen said Myanmar must prevent “ongoing discrimination and the unwarranted systematic abuse against the Rohingya”.Malaysia’s top counter-terrorism official has said Myanmar faces a growing danger of attacks by foreign militants in support of Rohingyas.last_img read more

Thai navy divers widening passage in search for footballers lost in cave

first_imgA helicopter transports heavy machinery that will be used to make a new entrance at the top of Tham Luang cave complex, as an ongoing search for members of an under-16 soccer team and their coach continues, in the northern province of Chiang Rai, Thailand on 1 July 2018. Photo: ReutersRescuers in Thailand scrabbled to clear a constricted passageway for divers deep inside a flooded cave complex on Monday as the search for 12 boys and their soccer coach entered a ninth day.The boys, aged between 11 and 16, and their 25-year-old coach disappeared on June 23 during an outing to the Tham Luang cave, which runs for 10 kilometres (6 miles) beneath the mountains in northern Chiang Rai province.Aside from belongings left at the mouth of the cave and handprints on cave walls, there has been no trace of them found since. With the way out of the cave blocked by flood waters from the heavy rains, rescuers are hoping that the boys made it through to an elevated rock mound that cavers have nicknamed “Pattaya Beach” after one of Thailand’s best known tourist destinations. The search for the boys has gripped the nation, with news bulletins dominated by updates on progress made by a mammoth rescue effort involving more than 1,000 personnel.Divers from a Thai navy SEAL unit have been at the forefront of the search, supported by international rescue teams from the United States, Britain and Japan and elsewhere.”The SEAL unit last night reached the T-junction and today they will press ahead to the left, but one obstacle we’ve found is a very small hole which we need to widen so that people can go through,” Chiang Rai governor Narongsak Osatanakorn told reporters on Monday.”As of now we have not yet reached Pattaya Beach,” he said.He added that an operations centre has been set up in what rescuers call the cave’s third chamber, about 1.7 kilometres (a mile) from the cave’s entrance.Narongsak added that water from the flooded cave has receded in recent days, allowing rescue teams to gain ground. The seasonal rains have hampered an increasingly desperate search operation, with divers groping their way along the walls of the flooded cave, barely able to see in the muddy water. As part of the rescue effort, search parties have been lowered down shafts on the mountainside, but it was unclear what progress they had made.Doctors say the boys could survive for many days without food, but much would depend on whether they found water clean enough to drink. At Mae Sai Prasitsart school, where six of the missing boys studied, special prayers were held for the junior soccer team during the morning assembly on Monday.”I am really worried, but I am hopeful because my friend is strong,” Thanakorn Ingsilapakul, 15, told Reuters.last_img read more

first_img 00:00 /13:00 Share Last year, the U.S. Treasury Department certified more than 100 communities in Harris County as “opportunity zones.” Those are areas designated as economically distressed where new investments might be eligible for federal tax incentives. The program was created by the federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.Gov. Greg Abbott submitted the state’s opportunity zone designations to the Treasury Department in March 2018. In a press release, Governor Abbott said:“This program will help highlight areas of Texas that are prime for business investment, and it will serve to bring more opportunities to hardworking families across the entire state. As we continue to recover after Harvey, these Opportunity Zone designations will also provide a much needed boost for local communities impacted by the storm.”But some Houston community members say they’re concerned about the potential negative impact such a designation could have on distressed, low-income areas.Florian Martin/Houston Public MediaHouston City Council Member Amanda Edwards. On Feb. 15, City Council Member Amanda Edwards is hosting a workshop for residents to learn about opportunity zones and how the program could affect their neighborhood. In the audio above, Edwards discusses her hopes and concerns regarding opportunity zones. first_imgJanuary 22, 2014 Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global How much would you pay for instant download ability?South Korea’s Ministry of Science and Technology announced plans to spend about $1.5 billion to build a national 5G wireless network to be commercially available by 2020. With the new 5G — which would be 1,000 times faster than most 4G LTE networks — users would be able download a full-length, 800-megabyte film in just one second. Yep, just one second. That’s it.Related: An Accelerated History of Internet Speed (Infographic)The country’s science ministry sees this plan as “preemptive,” noting in a statement on Wednesday, “Countries in Europe, China and the US are making aggressive efforts to develop 5G technology…and we believe there will be fierce competition in this market in a few years.”South Korea is home to tech heavy-hitters like Samsung and LG, and is known for not only being an interconnected nation, but having the fastest internet in the world. The 5G network would not only be a boon for country’s mobile and telecommunications industries. Apparently the faster internet speed would make it possible for travelers on 310 mph bullet trains to get access to their e-mail and preferred social media networks. When wireless reaches that speed in the U.S., well, watch out.Related: Gangnam: The Silicon Valley of South Korea  Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box.center_img Register Now » 2 min readlast_img read more
