first_imgDemocratic Senator Daphne Campbell’s bill urging the US Congress to protect children of immigrants living in the states under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA) passed its first committee of reference last week and now moves on the Judiciary Committee. The measure, SM 882, calls on Congress to preserve DACA, the program, begun under President Barack Obama in 2012 that allows immigrants who came to the United States as children to apply for temporary residence and eligibility for a work permit in this country.Last September, President Donald Trump abruptly rescinded the program, but deferred full implementation of the rescission until March 5, 2018, kicking the resolution of the issue to Congress.Haitian-born FL State Senator Daphne Campbell wants govt. to denounce Trump’s racist remarks Almost 800,000 immigrants qualified under DACA, including 50,216 in Florida. Requirements included arrival in the U.S. prior to the age of 16, and ongoing residence since June 15, 2007. “By sending this message to Washington DC, we are urging Congress to put its foolishness aside and pass the DACA for these children, so they can stay here and they don’t have to be deported,” Senator Campbell told the committee. “We are the ones who have the voices. They are the voiceless.”The committee passed SM 882 on a 3-2 vote.last_img read more

first_imgJamaica is reporting a record increase of visitor arrivals to the island during the first two months of the year.Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett, speaking at a ceremony in Kingston on the weekend, where he was honored ‘Caribbean Tourism Minster of the Year’ 2017, by the Caribbean Journal, said that January ended at 12 per cent over last year, and February is “still going ahead of last year.”Data from the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) showed that a record 4.3 million tourists visited Jamaica in 2017, providing a revenue flow of approximately US$3 billion.  Bartlett said that the tourism industry is a “significant driver” of Jamaica’s economy, noting that it has been the fastest growing sector, and the largest contributor to global Gross Domestic Product (GDP), over the last 10 years. He said the industry employs 10 per cent of the global workforce, and accounts for more than 30 per cent of trade in services.“Tourism today has become a mammoth industry, that has embraced more than 79 countries,” he stated. He said Jamaica will welcome five million visitors to the island by 2019 and that there are more opportunities for higher levels of production, growth, employment, and a higher level of visibility of the Jamaican economy within the Caribbean space.last_img read more

first_imgTourism Minister Edmund Bartlett has pointed to music tourism as a way of expanding the industry based on Jamaica’s strength as the region’s top entertainment destination.Addressing a recent graduation ceremony in the western parish of St. James, Bartlett said that in order to fully capitalize, “We are positioning” the tourism sector to work strategically with the music industry to create valuable products and experiences for visitors.“Our music continues to set Jamaica apart from rival destinations,” the Minister pointed out.Increasingly, music fans come to Jamaica“Each year more and more reggae music fans converge on the island to enjoy great music and the offerings of a remarkable destination. The resounding success of music festivals like Reggae Sumfest and Sting have helped to enhance our international profile significantly,” he added.Bartlett said while the Ministry is committed to fostering the continued development of the entertainment industry and its full integration into the tourism product, he is fully cognizant that there is still more to be done to maximize the potential of “this important” sub-sector.“So, as we put in place the framework to further diversify our tourism product, we are well aware of the enormous benefits if we get this right.”Special focus on entertainment tourism “We have to give visitors more things to do when they come to our island. We have to tap into their passion points, and music is a great way to start. Simply put, we are placing a special focus on developing entertainment tourism as part of our growth strategy,” he noted.Bartlett said that while the country’s goal of welcoming five million visitors annually remains on target, there is simply no room for complacency. He said that as good as the current offerings may be, stakeholders should always be looking to innovate and focus on growing earnings per visitor and retaining more of those earnings in Jamaica.“It goes without saying that entertainment is an area in which we are world beaters,” he added.“Therefore, we are taking the necessary steps to capitalize on the tremendous potential Jamaica has in this area to significantly boost our arrivals and tourism earnings,” he said.last_img read more
