Goal Setting Strategies for Kids & Teens

August 6, 2020

Tagged: , , , , , , , , , ,

first_imgFacebook4Tweet0Pin0 Submitted by Gyro Psychology ServicesThe first steps in goal setting is deciding what it is you want and why you want it. Once you’ve decided what it is you want, whether it is trying a new activity, making new friends, improving grades or decreasing stress, it’s important to map out the steps you need to accomplish what you want to achieve. Once you’ve decided what it is you want and mapped out at least the first few steps let friends, teachers and family members that you want to make a change and share your goal and plan to achieve it.Getting support is a key component to accomplishing goals as others will support you should your resolve be shaken or that inner desire to continue to move forward begins to waver. Remember, optimism, positive thinking and focusing on what you’ve accomplished instead of how you may have messed up will help keep you moving forward toward success. Here are a few tips that will help you get the ball rolling:Set specific, realistic goals for yourself. Change does not come easily. Setting realistic goals increases that chances that you will accomplish them and feel the indescribable feeling of success. If you want to make new friends, it might be best to write down activities you like to do, your interests, and the types of people you enjoy spending time with. From there you can begin to explore activities where the types of people you want to meet might be (e.g., community-based classes).  Then share your goal with others and get their support.Realize that it might take some time before you see the results of your efforts. You have the power to make changes right away by focusing on goals that are short term and coincide with your established routines. Goals that are further away from your routines like being an accomplished violinist or doing barrel races at rodeos will likely take some time to accomplish. Your body, your brain and others in your environment will need some time to adjust to this change in direction. Please be patient with yourself. Focus on what you accomplish daily, celebrate your successes with the ones you love and keep moving forward toward realizing your dream.Remind yourself of what you want daily. One tip is to look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself what it is you want.  You can also write it down first thing in the morning and write down what you did to accomplish your goal at the end of the day. You will then be positioned to seize opportunities that will help you move forward and strengthen your resolve to achieve what you want. Every time you remind yourself of your goal, you’re training your brain to make it happen. It’s magic!Setting goals to involve pleasing others often lead to disappointment. The real key to making any change is to find the desire or motivation within yourself. Decide what you want and go after it! You have to do it because YOU want it to happen, not because a girlfriend, boyfriend, coach, parent, or someone else wants you to.  The people you trust in your life will provide support to you as you move forward with accomplishing your goals providing that you are making healthy choices.Making mistakes or misjudgements are learning opportunities. Slip-ups and mistakes are actually part of the learning process. When mistakes happen, think about what you learned from the mistake, make adjustments and move forward. Perhaps you will need to make some adjustments along the way, like being realistic about what you actually can achieve in the time frame you want. The key is to be flexible, focused, connected, and motivated to achieve what you want. Please realize that it’s totally okay to mess up when trying to make a change.  It’s not easy. When the dust has settled, brush yourself off, reset, rethink and continue to move forward.  The feeling of personal pride, accomplishment, resiliency and success will be sure to follow – sometimes in exciting and unpredictable ways. Please feel free to contact us should you need help with goal setting or want to make a change, 360.236.0206.  We’re here to help!Gyro Psychology Services5191 Corporate Center Court SELacey, Washington  98503360.236.0206866.616.GYRO (4976)last_img read more

New Sand Replenishment Project to Begin Mid-July

August 4, 2020

first_imgBy John BurtonMONMOUTH BEACH – The beaches along the Monmouth County coast are going to get a considerable amount of help with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ replenishment project, slated to begin this summer.U.S. Representative Frank Pallone Jr. (D-NJ) joined Mayor Susan Howard and Sea Bright Borough Councilman William J. Keeler during a brief news conference Friday, May 3, to offer details for the planned $102 million federal project.Super Storm Sandy flattened beaches along the shore by as much as 5 to 10 feet and caused some of those locations, which were in need of work, to even further deteriorate, Pallone said. The replenishment project will be done in four contracts; the first will cover the Monmouth Beach-Sea Bright portion, said Jennifer Thalhauser, project manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in a telephone interview. That first contract will be awarded by mid-June with work beginning mid-July.The four contracts – three scheduled to be done concurrently – will cover 21 miles of beachfront from Manasquan to Sea Bright, excluding Deal. The project is estimated to take about 215 days and will be paid for entirely by federal money, Thalhauser said. The beaches will get an additional 5 million cubic yards or more of sand, according to Thalhauser.Monmouth Beach Mayor Susan Howard on theborough’s beachfront. The project will obviously coincide with the summer beach-going season, but Pallone and Thalhauser said it was important to move quickly to restore the beaches to protect them and the area’s infrastructure from future storms. Hurricane season begins June 1 and continues through November.“The sooner we get it done, the better,” Pallone said.To accommodate beachgoers, Pallone said work will be done on closed 1,000-foot stretches of beach at a time. The purpose of the replenishment project is not to make sure there are nice beaches for vacationers, the congressman stressed. “It’s really to protect the infrastructure” with extended beach areas serving as storm breaks.During the 1992 nor’easter that caused severe flooding and damage in the area, ocean water came over the seawall and compromised Ocean Avenue/Highway 36. Last October, even with the devastation of Sandy, that didn’t happen.“The beach saved our town,” Monmouth Beach mayor Susan Howard said, explaining the flooding the community experienced was from the Shrewsbury River side.“As bad as it was for Sea Bright,” Councilman Keeler said, “if we did not have that sand [from previous replenishment projects] much of Sea Bright would be gone.”The projects actually save money in the long run and are approved by a rather strict cost benefit analysis done by the Army Corps of Engineers, Pallone said. The corps had done a replenishment project for much of Monmouth Beach’s 1.5 miles of beach in 2011. In November 2012, the corps completed the length of borough beach and continued on through the entirety of Sea Bright in a project approved prior to Sandy. The new project is intended to repair the damage caused by Sandy and restore the oceanfront erosion control project to its original template, designed by the corps in the 1990s, Thalhauser said. The federal money has been allocated from the Sandy Aid package approved by Congress earlier this year, championed by Pallone and New Jersey and New York federal lawmakers and governors.last_img read more

J. Paul Reddam‘s Ralis, winner of the Grade I Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga Sept. 7, worked five furlongs at Santa Anita Saturday in 1:01.60 under jockey Mario Gutierrez. BREEDERS’ CUP-BOUND TALCO SHARP FOR CITY OF HOPE MILETalco has been nothing if not consistent since coming in from France last year, winning three of his nine starts in the U.S., including the Grade I Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita in June, a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge victory that gives him a fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland Oct. 31.Next up: Sunday’s Grade II, $200,000 City of Hope Mile on turf.“We’re looking for another good effort,” said John Sadler, who trains the 4-year-old French-bred son of Pivotal for the brothers Hronis, Peter and Kosta. “He’ll be meeting the same horse that beat him a half-length in the Del Mar Mile (Avanzare), but all Talco’s races have been good.“He was a bit unlucky at Del Mar with a slow pace and a wide trip, but he’s ready to go.”Talco, a committed stretch runner, has been victimized by slow starts in at least five of his races in North America, but the chestnut is a gem of consistency, with a 5-5-3 record from 16 starts and earnings of $531,123.The field for the City of Hope: Poshky, James Graham, 12-1; Hot Hot Seat, Tyler Baze, 20-1; Big Cazanova, Kent Desormeaux, 15-1; Silentio, Mike Smith, 15-1; Twentytwentyvision, Victor Espinoza, 5-1; Talco, Rafael Bejarano, 5-2; Avanzare, Gary Stevens, 3-1; Big Bane Theory, Joe Talamo, 5-1; and Alert Bay, Martin Garcia, 4-1.center_img TRIPLE CROWN ACE AMERICAN PHAROAH GALLOPSSTEADY TALCO SET FOR SUNDAY’S CITY OF HOPEMASOCHISTIC FIRES BULLET FOR SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIPlast_img read more

SA to ‘name, shame corrupt officials’

December 18, 2019

first_img25 February 2013 The South African government plans to publish the names and details of those officials convicted of corruption in pamphlets, newspapers and radio advertisements, says Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Jeff Radebe. Radebe was speaking during a media briefing by the government’s justice, crime prevention and security cluster in Pretoria on Sunday. Radebe said freezing orders and forfeitures, which were also public knowledge, would also be published. “We want to ensure that the public is conscious about what has happened, because sometimes when people talk about corruption, when we say ’32 people have been convicted’, it’s just a number. But if you can attach a number to actual persons, you will understand that this fight against corruption, we do it in a very meaningful way.”Anti-corruption task team shows results Radebe said that since the setting up of the anti-corruption task team in 2010, 237 people had been arrested. Of these, 32 people had been convicted and two acquitted, while the cases of the remaining 203 accused were still before court. The criminal assets of 59 persons to the value of R816-million had been frozen, with nearly R78-million in assets already forfeited and returned to the state, he said. The task team had also recovered three farms valued at a total of R59-million which were lost through corruption. Another five farms worth a collective R74-million had been frozen and would be recovered soon. Radebe said good progress had been made with the national government’s intervention in Limpopo, and that the task team was investigating 39 criminal cases involving fraud and corruption – including those involving 29 persons and four companies. He said 87 people were alleged to have benefited to the value of more than R5-million from corrupt activities, and freezing orders had been obtained against 32 people. Radebe said the use of freezing orders was an important weapon to prevent those involved in corruption from benefiting from their ill-gotten gains while their cases were being finalised.Tackling cyber crime The government is also stepping up measures to address cyber-attacks. Radebe said an announcement would be made soon on the implementation of the National Cybersecurity Policy Framework. He said that, since last year up to December, 113 cases of cybercrime had been finalised – with 83% of these cases resulting in a conviction. A total of 40 investigators at the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation unit have been trained in detecting cybercrime, and at the end of the third quarter last year 60% of identified cyber threats had been addressed.Electronic tags for parolees Radebe said the Department of Correctional Service’s pilot project involving the use of electronic tags on those out on parole – which commenced in February last year – had been a success. The department is now looking into extending the use of electronic tags to other categories of offenders, including those serving custodial sentences. He added that from 1 April, it would be compulsory for every inmate who was without a qualification equivalent to Grade 9 to complete a training course equivalent to an Adult Education and Training (AET) course of between level one and four. The training is part of a drive by the government to rehabilitate inmates and equip them with skills so that they can have a better chance of returning successfully into society after being released.Electronic case management system Radebe said applicants would soon be able to lodge cases electronically, while prosecutors and defence lawyers would be able to receive real-time updates on cases, with the expected rolling out of an electronic case management system this year. The department aims to roll out the integrated solution at more than 20 sites by the end of this year and to a further 100 sites by the end of next year, the minister said. The system was integrated with police systems earlier this month to provide instant messaging and case details to process clerks. Once it is fully up and running, the system will allow electronic charge sheets to be lodged and cases to be enrolled electronically, which will automatically create an electronic court roll at the Department of Justice. Radebe said the backlog of cases had been brought down from 34 926 or 17.4% of all cases as at the end of March last year, to 29 604 or 16.2% of all cases by the end of December. Turning to violence against women and children, Radebe said that since the re- establishment of Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit in 2010, 695 life imprisonment sentences had been handed down, while prison sentences totaling over 36 000 years had been handed down. Across the country the unit now has 176 offices attached to police clusters, he said. Forensic social workers had been appointed who would assist the police with investigating crimes against children and provide expert evidence court. Radebe urged community members to come forward and report crimes of violence against women and children. Source: read more

Even after his passport was revoked in February 2018, he travelled to at least six countries — UK, UAE, Hong Kong, France and Germany,” the Congress leader said. Egypt Brotherhood chief in court as new trial begins lawyer

first_imgCAIRO – Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood chief Mohammed Badie Monday attended the first session of his second trial, his lawyer said, marking his first public appearance since he was arrested in August.Badie, the Brotherhood’s Supreme Guide, appeared alongside 14 other members of the Islamist movement to face charges of inciting violence in the Cairo neighbourhood of Bahr al-Aazam that led to deadly clashes in July, lawyer Mohamed Damaty said.“All 15 defendants including Badie attended the trial today,” Damaty told reporters outside a Cairo police academy where Monday’s session was held. Other senior Brotherhood officials in the dock included Essam al-Erian and Mohammed al-Beltagui, he said, adding that the trial was later adjourned toFebruary 11.Badie and  his two deputies, Khairat al-Shater and Rashad Bayoumi, are already being tried on separate charges related to the deaths of protesters who stormed the Brotherhood’s Cairo headquarters on June 30.Badie was not present at the two sessions held so far of his first trial.Damaty slammed Monday’s hearing as “political” in nature.“There is no proof that they (defendants) have committed the crimes that they are accused of,” he said.“We asked for their release but the court has adjourned the proceedings to February 11.” Only a few Egyptian journalists were allowed to attend Monday’s opening session.Several Muslim Brotherhood leaders and members including Badie have been put on trial as part of a massive crackdown by Egypt’s new military-installed authorities against the movement following the army’s overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July.Morsi himself belongs to the Brotherhood movement, which a Cairo court banned in September.Security forces launched a sweeping crackdown on Morsi’s supporters in August, violently dispersing two protest camps in the capital.More than 1,000 people have been killed since Morsi’s ouster — mainly his supporters — and the authorities have arrested thousands more, mostly Islamists.Morsi is on trial for his alleged involvement in the deaths of protesters outside the presidential palace in December 2012.The army ousted Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president, on July 3 after millions of people took to the streets to demand his resignation, accusing him of betraying the revolution that brought him to power.last_img read more
