Plans unveiled to fix water debacle in Falcarragh and Gortahork

first_imgOfficials from Irish Water outlined the programme of works that are to commence immediately in the Gortahork and Falcarragh areas at a public meeting in Falcarragh today (Fri). It is understood that the Irish water utility, in partnership with Donegal County Council, will replace the existing water mains with high-density polyethylene (plastic) pipes to provide a more reliable water supply and reduce the high levels of leakage.“We are all too aware of the problems and distress the recent burst pipes have caused to residents and businesses in the Falcarragh and Gortahork areas. Speaking following the meeting, Councillor Noreen McGarvey welcomed the plans, she said: “It is welcomed news that Irish Water together with Donegal County Council have fast-tracked their programme and are in a position to commence works on the Gortahork scheme this coming week and the Falcarragh scheme due to start in October.”Farran Construction Ltd also outlined their timetable of the works and have advised that it will be necessary to introduce some road closures, reduced traffic access and planned outages of water. All of which will be advised in advance to the local residents and businesses. Some 1750m of problematic mains will be replaced in the Gortahork area and will take until March 2020 to complete.Approx 1600m in Falcarragh has been identified as the worst affected and it is anticipated that these works will be completed by Jan 2020. Cllr Mc Garvey also acknowledged the work done by the teams on the ground who often worked unsociable hours to restore services during the months when the burst pipes occurred.“I fully understand the implications for business and households during the periods when water was off due to the bursts so I will be asking Donegal County Council to consider a reduction in rates for those affected.”Plans unveiled to fix water debacle in Falcarragh and Gortahork was last modified: September 6th, 2019 by Shaun KeenanShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Science Media Tolerates Silliness

Maybe We’re Already Their Captives in a ‘Galactic Zoo’ (Live Science). You can use “maybe” to tell any tall tale. Mindy Waisberger gets away with imagining, in a “science” media site, that space aliens—for which there is zero evidence—have put our planet in their zoo. Let’s play her game. “Maybe” she is one of them! Why, she might even be part of an alien conspiracy to discredit Earthling science by making it look stupid.Universities spooked by Trump order tying free speech to grants (Nature). Oh no! Universities will have to stop violating the 1st Amendment in order to receive funds for science grants! Spoooooky! Did anyone at Nature think about how this headline could come across to the average taxpayer?A mating war in diving beetles has stopped the evolution of species (University of Copenhagen). Evolution is a fact, you see, even when it isn’t. The same process yields opposite outcomes. What flexibility this gives to Darwin storytellers! In nature, males eager attempts to mate with females can be so extreme that they will harm females. Such negative impact of mating interactions has been suggested to promote the emergence of new species under some circumstances. Surprisingly, one type of diving beetle species now show that this conflict between the sexes can instead lead to an evolutionary standstill in which mating enhancing traits in males and counter-adaptations in females prevent the formation of new species.Natural selection favors cheaters (UC California, Riverside). Since natural selection built everything in the biosphere, as Darwinians believe, perhaps the authors of this study are illustrations of their thesis. If so, don’t listen to them!Scholar makes ‘moral case’ for letting people decide their own age  (The College Fix). The assumed right to identify your own sex, gender or other personal reality has gone so far overboard, this “scholar” thinks you should be able to declare your age, too. Some already do this, of course, answering their age as “29” every birthday. He is in favor of “trans-ageism” in order to avoid “discrimination,” he argues. The piece, by Joona Räsänen of the University of Oslo in Norway, titled “A Moral Case for Legal Age Change,” concludes that there are three scenarios when a change to one’s legal age should be allowed: When “the person genuinely feels his age differs significantly from his chronological age,” when “the person’s biological age is recognized to be significantly different from his chronological age,” and when “age change would likely prevent, stop or reduce ageism, discrimination due to age, he would otherwise face.”Räsänen differentiates between “chronological” age, or how long the person has actually lived; “biological age,” or the state of one’s body; and “emotional” age, the age as which one identifies.“Legal age is a cause of severe discrimination for some people whose biological and emotional age do not match their chronological age,” he argues.Did the “scholar” think through the social consequences? What if a 30-year old wants to apply for Social Security on grounds he identifies as a senior? Maybe he could get senior discounts at restaurants, too. What if a 21-year old declares himself a 15-year old to dodge the draft? Imagine the possibilities! To understand what’s going on, watch this video from Prager U.last_img read more

Bing According to Microsoft: Unique Visits Up 8% in June

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… frederic lardinois Tags:#Microsoft#news#NYT#search#web Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Related Posts center_img We already knew that Bing, Microsoft’s new search engine was doing quite well, but today, Microsoft released its own data about the state of the service. Bing launched just a bit more than one month ago, and since then, we have seen reports from numerous third-party web analytics firms that Bing was indeed doing quite well. According to Microsoft’s own data, Bing saw an 8% growth in unique users in June compared to the previous month. The company also noted that the number of users who would be “likely to recommend” Bing to others doubled in June. Shopping and TravelIn addition, Microsoft also announced that Bing Shopping saw a 300% increase in visits and Bing Travel saw its traffic grow by 90% month to month (though Bing Travel’s image is a bit tarnished by a recent controversy about its design). Source: StatCounter Global Stats – Search Engine Market ShareAdvertisersOverall, the numbers Microsoft cites for Bing’s traffic compare well with data we have seen from various web analytics firms, so we have little reason to believe that Microsoft doctored them (though the latest data from Compete is slightly less encouraging for Bing). Microsoft, however, also detailed some data about the results advertisers are seeing on Bing, though we will have to withhold judgment here. It is hard to find hard data about this, and while Microsoft announced that TigerDirect saw its sales and order volume triple, and its conversion rates and average order size “increase significantly,” we just don’t know if this was a special case or something advertisers saw across the board.DevelopersAccording to Microsoft, developers are also taking a liking to the Bing API. The number of registered developers doubled last month, and incoming API requests are up 50% since launch. What’s Next? While Microsoft didn’t specify any exact numbers, the fact that far more users are likely to recommend Bing than they were likely to recommend Live Search must be an encouraging sign for the company. Microsoft didn’t specify any future plans in today’s post, but we know that Microsoft’s biggest challenge is to overcome Google’s momentum and to keep users on its service and from switching back to Google. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hostinglast_img read more
