first_imgThe Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies’ new building is set to open in 2013 after a nine-year delay. The opening will see the Centre move from its current location on George Street to a 3.25 acre site next to Magdalen College. The building on the new Marston Road site was expected to open in 2004 after work began in 2002 but had to stop due to issues of funding.Registrar Richard Makepeace said, “As is often the case, deadlines have been stretched. We were expecting to be ready to open by the end of this year but we are hoping to have the opening in 2013. There will be work going on throughout the year, which is basically the fitting out of the interior.”The centre was initially thought to cost £60 million. A figure for the final spend is not yet available, but it is thought that it will certainly exceed the initial budgetary estimate. The Centre is a Recognised Independent Centre of the University of Oxford, set up in 1985. It is not a part of the University, but works with the University in research and teaching. Other Recognised Independent Centres of the University include the Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies, and the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies. The OCIS website describes the new building as blending “the architectural features of the traditional Oxford colleges with the forms and styles of the classical period of Islam. The result is a unique symbol of the harmony between two ancient traditions of scholarship brought together for the pursuit of knowledge.” Islamic and Western culture and architecture are brought together within the design, and registrar Richard Makepeace said that “If there is a message in the building it is that we are not as different as we sometimes tend to believe.”The new building will have accommodation for up to 40 graduate students, as well as a mosque, minaret, dining hall and parking.  Another benefit of the move will be the increase in library space. OCIS said that “the move to purpose-built new premises will increase the Library’s size fourfold and enable wider access to a much more extensive collection.”The Centre aims to provide a meeting point for the Western and Islamic worlds of learning, contributing to multi-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary study of the Islamic world. The OCIS enjoys the support of its patron Prince Charles as well as visits from other international figures including Nelson Mandela and Kofi Annan, then Secretary-General of the UN.Mohammad Ali, member of Oxford University Islamic Society, commented, ‘Our general thoughts about the new centre are positive, since we appreciate the existing centre on George Street is somewhat small.’last_img read more

USC sand volleyball adds Olympian to staff

first_imgWhen it comes to women’s sand volleyball, there aren’t as many players as legendary as Misty May-Treanor, who served as the volunteer assistant coach for USC’s sand volleyball program last year. This season, she’s staying home to take care of her baby girl, but there’s no need to worry for the program because of its new volunteer assistant coach for this season: two-time Olympian Dain Blanton.Head coach Anna Collier announced the exciting news for the program.“Words can’t describe just how fortunate we are to have another gold medalist come aboard,” Collier commented. “We look forward to everything he has to share and teach our team about his experience.”Blanton definitely knows a thing or two about winning. In the 2000 Sydney Games, he won gold in beach volleyball with partner Eric Fonoimoana. In 2004, he competed in the Athens Games with Jeff Nygaard, current assistant coach for undefeated USC men’s volleyball, making Blanton the first two-time male beach volleyball Olympian for Team USA.Before his Olympic success, Blanton, as a sophomore, had a key role in Pepperdine’s 1992 NCAA championship; he was also an All-American for the Waves. On the professional beach circuit, he achieved a plethora of accolades. Winning the 1997 AVP Hermosa Grand Slam made him the first male                        African-American to win a major beach volleyball event. He earned a bronze medal with Kent Steffes in the 1997 Beach Volleyball World Championships. In his successful pro career, Blanton clinched nine AVP crowns (four with Nygaard), two FIVB titles and 11 beach tournaments. In 2003, Blanton captured the title of AVP’s Best Offensive Player and he and Nygaard were crowned the AVP Team of the Year. Only a few other players can say that they’ve obtained as many championships — college, Olympics or professionally — as Blanton. His nearly unmatched success will benefit the Women of Troy immensely.Off the sand, Blanton also covers beach volleyball, NBA, MLB and college basketball and football as a TV sports broadcaster for networks such as ESPN, NBC, ABC, FOX Sports Net, Universal Sports Network and Pac-12 Networks. Not only is Blanton “a force to be reckoned with on the court,” but also he is an inspiring motivational speaker and mentor to students through GettingToGold — a nonprofit that he founded. In 1997, he created Dain’s Day at the Beach, a charity that allows urban youth to play beach volleyball. To say that Blanton is a success would be an understatement. As a coach at USC, he will no doubt share his expertise and methods to achieve success with the team. He will bring his winning mindset and intensify the team’s already victorious Trojan spirit and work ethic.Compounding the success that USC’s powerhouse program has obtained since its founding in 2012 (third place finishes nationally in 2013 and 2014, two national championship pairs in 2013 and 2014), having Blanton as a coach will continue to grow the program and solidify it as a top program for many years to come.last_img read more

Facebook to verify ads with postcards after Russian meddling Update

Seattle says Facebook is violating law about election ads Citation: Facebook to verify ads with postcards after Russian meddling (Update) (2018, February 18) retrieved 18 July 2019 from Facebook will soon rely on centuries-old technology to try to prevent foreign meddling in U.S. elections: the post office. Baffled in 2016 by Russian agents who bought ads to sway the U.S. presidential campaign, Facebook’s global politics and government outreach director, Katie Harbath, told a meeting of the National Association of Secretaries of State in Washington on Saturday that the company would send postcards to potential buyers of political ads to confirm they reside in the U.S.The recipient would then have to enter a code in Facebook to continue buying the ad. The method will first apply to ads that name candidates ahead of the midterm elections in November, said Facebook spokesman Andy Stone. The plan was unveiled a day after special counsel Robert Mueller charged 13 Russians with interfering in the presidential election. Mueller’s indictment described how Russian agents stole social security numbers and other information from real Americans and used them to create bank and PayPal accounts in order to buy online ads. Agents also recruited Americans to do things such as hold up signs at rallies organized to create content for Russian-created social media posts.Facebook uncovered some 3,000 Russian-linked ads on Facebook and Instagram bought before and after the November 2016 election that it says may have been seen by as many as 150 million users. But ads were only part of the problem, as the Mueller indictments say that Russian agents also set up fake pages with names such as “Secured Borders,” ”Blacktivist” and “United Muslims of America” that had hundreds of thousands of followers.Facebook did not say how the new postcard method of verification would prevent foreign agents from setting up local mailing addresses and hiring people in the U.S. to check them. But Stone said the method was “one piece of a much larger effort to address foreign electoral influence on our platform.”Facebook’s efforts largely center around verifying people on the platform are who they say they are. To catch duplicitous ad-buyers, for instance, it is now testing out in Canada a system that allows people to see which ads are being bought by a Facebook page—say, a candidate’s—even if the person checking the ad is not in the group to whom the ad was intended to be shown.Stone said Facebook was also able to detect and remove “tens of thousands” of fake Facebook pages in advance of French, German and British elections last year using improved machine learning techniques. The company has said it would double the number of people working on its safety and security team to 20,000 this year and add 1,000 people to review advertising content. © 2018 The Associated Press.
